Our people are our most valuable asset, and we recognize that our employees and their families have diverse needs. We offer:

What we do

We have an enduring responsibility to safeguard the American people and promote U.S. security in a complex and evolving maritime environment. We are a military service, a law enforcement organization, regulatory agency, members of the Intelligence Community and first responders.

With unique authorities, broad jurisdiction, flexible operational capabilities and an expansive network of domestic and international partnerships, we advance national security, economic prosperity and global maritime influence.

Our ability to fulfill our three broad roles—maritime safety, maritime security and maritime stewardship—makes us truly a unique instrument of national policy and well-being. We do more than guard the coast; we help safeguard the global maritime commons.

Maritime safety

A fundamental responsibility of the U.S. government is to safeguard the lives and safety of its citizens. In the maritime realm, this duty falls mainly to the Coast Guard. We improve safety at sea through complementary programs of mishap prevention, search and rescue and accident investigation.

Maritime security

We enforce federal laws and treaties on waters under U.S. jurisdiction and other international agreements on the high seas. We can board any vessel subject to U.S. jurisdiction and inspect, search, inquire and arrest. We wield our broad law enforcement and regulatory power with prudence and restraint primarily to suppress violations of our drug, immigration and fisheries laws, as well as against terrorist threats.

We maintain a high state of readiness to operate as a specialized service alongside the Navy and Marine Corps. We provide the following national defense capabilities:

  • Maritime interception and interdiction
  • Maritime environmental response
  • Port operations, security and defense
  • Theater security cooperation
  • Coastal sea control
  • Rotary wing air intercept
  • Combating terrorism
  • Maritime operational threat response support

In recent years, Coast Guard forces have conducted at-sea interception and antipiracy operations, foreign liaison and other supporting tasks in all key theaters.

Maritime stewardship

We enforce laws intended to protect the environment for the common good and safeguard sensitive marine habitats, mammals and endangered species. We enforce laws protecting our waters from the discharge of oil, hazardous substances and non-indigenous invasive species. To do all this, we focus on education and prevention, law enforcement, emergency response and containment and disaster recovery. We also provide mission-critical command and control support for forces responding to environmental disasters in the maritime domain.

Maritime stewardship missions

  • Living marine resources
  • Marine environmental protection
  • Other law enforcement (fisheries)
  • Aids to navigation
  • Ice operations

We also carry out numerous port and waterways management tasks. We make sure we have a safe, efficient and navigable waterway system to support domestic commerce, international trade and military sealift requirements for national defense.

We provide long and short-range aids to navigation, navigation schemes and standards, support for mapping and charting, tide, current and pilotage information, vessel traffic services, domestic icebreaking to facilitate commerce and technical assistance and advice.
