Federal retirement plans

The Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) is a three-tiered retirement system consisting of a basic FERS annuity, Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) and Social Security benefits. FERS provides benefits for voluntary retirement, involuntary retirement, disability or death of the employee or retiree. The basic annuity, a defined benefit, is based on years of service and average pay.

Like a 401(k) plan, the TSP allows you to contribute to your retirement savings via payroll deductions. Employees covered under FERS are eligible for matching contributions of up to five percent of an employee's basic pay, every pay period that they are contributing to TSP.
